100 reasons to see a Professional Counselor/Therapist

Reason # 33: Academic Troubles and Learning disabilities

Learning disabilities, such as ADHD and dyscalculia, can present with challenges for students in the classroom. To further complicate issues, the “spoon feeding” techniques used to address the learning disabilities of certain students, ill prepares them in the long run for the working world, where they are expected to thrive, and no one is required and usually non caring towards making special accommodations for them.

While there are no quick solutions to learning disabilities, having your child or adolescent see a Professional Counselor to address her learning disability, will help promote neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injuries, disorders and diseases and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment.

As a professional counselor, I routinely witness the frustration most parents have over their child's struggles in academics, especially when they don't witness immediate results from cognitive techniques, aimed at pushing and teaching the student to become more engaged in a task they traditionally struggle with. However the science behind promoting neuroplasticity, is pushing the student towards engaging in tasks, which triggers the brain to rewire itself, towards becoming efficient with the assigned task. This process can take several months, before significant results are witnessed.
